In the animal kingdom, the North American bat has received a
bad rap. Bats are seen as the blood sucking villains of horror movies that
swoop down on unsuspecting ladies and cute little dogs. The opposite perspective is seen in the owl,
which is the symbol wisdom to many.
In truth, the North American bat is an insect eating machine. They do not swoop down to entangle themselves in the hair of women and could care less about your pets. Now, compare that to the Screech Owl, who makes a sound that will make the hair on your back stand straight up; and who will swoop down and attack you and Fido.
The difference is the preconceived perception.

The difference is the preconceived perception.
For years, Christianity and the local church have enjoyed a
place of honor and respect in the eyes of most Americans; but that perception
is changing. Mr. and Mrs. USA citizen and most of the world in general is
seeing Christianity with different eyes according to Pew Research. A new, less
favorable, preconceived perception is being adopted. Christianity, like the
bat, is getting a bad rap!
As Christians, we can bemoan the reasons and debate about
what has caused this turnaround and do nothing to change the facts; or we can “own-up”
to the problem and do something about it. For years the church has called on
the community to come to it while doing little for the community. Most neighborhoods
see the church as a tax-exempt building and not as a group of people making an
impact for the betterment of the community. It is time for the church to come
out of the “exclusive-only-respectable-people” closet and start being the
church! And, here’s a new concept, start serving the community!
Take the example of our Lord Jesus. He left the realms of
heaven to come minister (serve) the world. Listen and heed to the words of Jesus:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven ( Matthew 5:16). Only by doing so can we change false perception.
