Seven Tips for Dealing with Anger

One of my favorite childhood characters was Smokey the Bear. I wasn’t surprised that he has his own website loaded with tips on how to prevent forest fires. On his site, Smokey gives good advice for putting out campfires:
  1. Allow the wood to burn completely to ash, if possible
  2. Pour lots of water on the fire, drown ALL embers, not just the red ones
  3. Pour until hissing sound stops
  4. Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel
  5. Scrape the sticks and logs to remove any embers
  6. Stir and make sure everything is wet and they are cold to the touch
  7. If you do not have water, use dirt. Mix enough dirt or sand with the embers. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cool. Remember: do NOT bury the fire as the fire will continue to smolder and could catch roots on fire that will eventually get to the surface and start a wildfire. There is wisdom to Smokey’s advice for putting out campfires that can also be applied to the wildfires of anger.  Like forest fires, anger is a burning emotion that must be completely put out or it can rekindle at unexpected times and turn into a raging monster that can cause devastating destruction.

By rewriting Smokey’s Rules, we have seven principles to overcoming anger and wrath:

  • Allow the fire of anger to burn completely to ash. Let it die. Do add to it and do not let others fuel the fire. Do not rehearse the matter in your head or your heart.
  • Pour lots of water on the fire of anger.  Drown ALL embers, not just the red ones, with Water of the Word.
  • Pour on prayer until hissing sound stops in the heart.
  • Stir the doused anger and separate the emotions from facts. Do not allow mixed feeling lay against one another.
  • Scrape the sticks and logs of hate with forgiveness to remove any chance of future flare ups.
  • Stir to remembrance the forgiveness and love God has granted you. Do so until the matter is put to rest.
  • Do NOT bury the fire of anger. The fire will continue to smolder and could catch the roots of bitterness on fire that will eventually get to the surface and start a wildfire.
