The lyrics of a big hit song by the Beatles takes a poke at
Christianity while asking two questions that deserve our attention. In the
song, Eleanor Rigby, the lyrics asks:
All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people, where do they all belong?
Jesus ministered to the misfits, the outcast, the hopeless, and
the sinners. The people that didn’t fit the norm, the lepers and disadvantaged,
were welcomed into the fellowship of our Lord. Are these lonely people welcomed
into the church family today? Are the country-pumpkin, the tattooed lady, the
pothead, and the prostitute made welcome when they show up in their overhauls
or mini-skits?
Self-serving saints are always offering lame excuses for the
empty pews among which is the most hypocritical; “People just don’t want to
hear the gospel.” Never mind the fact that we speak a foreign language to them
using church terms they don’t know. The
ushers welcome them in their Sunday best but no one offers to sit with them.
Look at the all the lonely people. They stand out like stains on a white shirt.
There is not a lack of people, there never has been. Jesus
said the fields are white to harvest. What is lacking today is a renewal of
purpose! The church is a lighthouse in a stormy world. The people manning the
lighthouse need to sit next the homeless, nurture the street kid, and love the outcast.
I look at all the lonely people.
I look at all the lonely people.
Where do they come from? They come from a sin-sick world.
Where do they belong? They belong in the church. Share
So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone
you find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the
people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was
filled with guests. (Matthew 22:9-10 NIV)
